Zinke is latest Trump cabinet member to have abused travel privileges
Interior Department watchdog says Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke violated numerous policies.

The Interior Department’s inspector general has determined that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is the latest member of President Donald Trump’s administration to have violated travel policies.

Zinke and his wife Lola were faulted by the Interior Department’s watchdog for numerous violations, including trying to obtain free travel and misuse of federal vehicles, according to Politico.

A new report says Zinke sought to designate his wife an agency volunteer in order to obtain free travel for her, that he often brought her in federal vehicles in violation of agency policy and that he neglected to get permission from ethics officials when he took campaign donors on a boat trip.

The Washington Post reports Zinke’s “decision to take an unarmed security detail on his overseas vacation cost taxpayers $25,000.”

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned in July after a series of controversies, including spending taxpayer money on first-class flights.

Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin was fired in March following criticism for expenses incurred during a 10-day trip to Europe in 2017.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned in September 2017 after months of scrutiny over his taxpayer-funded private travel.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin reportedly reimbursed taxpayers for his private travel to watch an eclipse with his wife.

Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao have also been criticized over taxpayer-funded travel expenses.

Zinke has been the subject of 14 federal investigations. The Trump administration reportedly tried to move a political appointee into the Interior Department’s watchdog role that is overseeing the many probes of Zinke. However, an Interior official appeared to walk back that decision on Thursday.

Ivanka Trump exaggerated, outright lied about real estate values for years
An investigation by ProPublica and WNYC reveals the first daughter shares her father's love of deceptive hyperbole.

A new sweeping investigation published by ProPublica and WNYC — the sort of thing that would, in a rational universe, result in consequences for the Trump family but, like that massive New York Times report about the Trumps’ generations of flagrant tax fraud, will sizzle across the internet to no avail — details the various deceptions President Trump and his family engaged in while, as Ivanka would say, “architecting” their real estate empire.

Speaking of Ivanka, the report reveals that the president’s elder daughter “gave false sales figures for projects in Mexico’s Baja California; Panama City, Panama; Toronto and New York’s SoHo neighborhood. These statements weren’t just the legendary Trump hype; they misled potential buyers about the viability of the developments.”

Here, an around-the-world tour of Ivanka Trump’s reported exaggerations, misleading statements, and flat-out lies, all for the family business:

Panama
During an interview in November 2008 (remember November 2008? Fun fact: It was ten thousand years ago), Ivanka Trump boasted that she “sold 40 units in Panama last month.” She went on to say that “it’s a 1,000-unit building, we’ve sold over 90 percent of it,” and that the units were going for a “500 percent premium to anything the luxury market has ever experienced prior to our entry.”

Is any of that true? No. Literally all of those statements are “exaggerated or outright false.”

That 2008 interview pushed back on Ivanka’s “40 units” claim, and she backpedaled, turning the “I” into a “we”: “We did, our project.” According to Jack Studnicky, lead real estate agent who was “deeply involved” with the project at hand (the Ocean Club) and, according to ProPublic and WNYC, “generally praised the Trumps,” said that, as far as he knew, Ivanka Trump hadn’t sold any units at all.

As for that 500 percent number, data filed with Panamanian securities officials puts the Trump bump at a more humble 150 percent premium.

Ratings for the Ocean Club’s bonds were lowered in February 2009, but you wouldn’t have known that by listening to the Trumps. A few weeks after the downgrade, Ivanka gushed about Panama in an interview with a publication called the Latin Business Chronicle. “Given the global downturn, the fact that sales remain so robust is a testament to the product, the brand and Panama,” she said. “Our biggest problem is not having enough inventory. We only have a small percent of the building left.”

In the end, the Ocean Club went bankrupt and the Trump name was removed.

Toronto
According to a 2016 bankruptcy filing, only 24.8 percent of units in the Trump International Hotel sold.

But in 2009, Ivanka described the place as “virtually sold out.” This building, too, was constructed but went bankrupt and the Trump name was removed.

New York City
Yet another property that was built, went bankrupt, and saw Trump’s name removed from its face.

The Trumps’ propensity to overstate sales led them, as ProPublica, WNYC and the New Yorker reported last year, to be investigated on potential felony fraud charges in one case. Ivanka had announced in June 2008 that 60 percent of the units at the SoHo tower had been bought when in fact 15 percent had, according to an affidavit filed by a Trump partner. The Manhattan district attorney’s office considered charging the Trumps but backed off after a visit from a donor — Trump’s attorney Marc Kasowitz. (The DA, Cyrus Vance, denied he was influenced by the donation but later changed his policy and now refuses donations from lawyers with cases before him.)

If you’re thinking, “didn’t I just read something about Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance and his questionable ethics re: investigations of alleged criminals?”, you are correct! He’s also been entangled in the Harvey Weinstein case. Vance’s failure to bring charges against the alleged serial sexual predator — along with the timely donations made to his campaign coffers by Weinstein’s attorneys — prompted an open letter from Time’s Up, which in turn led to Gov. Andrew Cuomo calling for an independent investigation of Vance’s handling of the Weinstein case.

Baja
In a promotional video, a smiling Ivanka told potential buyers that she “actually chose to purchase a unit in the first tower” of this property.

What she failed to disclose is that her deposit amounted to “less than half of the 30 percent other investors put in for their units,” as Univision reported. “Univision also reported that the developers overstated the percentage of units sold and had assigned 34 units to their own executives and other related parties.”

Trump Reportedly Plans on Tapping Another Mar-a-Lago Member for Diplomatic Post

President Donald Trump is reportedly planning on tapping yet another Mar-a-Lago member for an overseas post.

According to a Palm Beach Daily exclusive, the president is “ready to nominate couture handbag designer and Palm Beach resident Lana Marks to become ambassador to South Africa.”

If named, Marks will become the fourth Mar-a-Lago member to nab a diplomatic post. Mar-a-Lago has a membership cap of only 500.

Robin Bernstein is now the ambassador to the Dominican Republic. Prior to getting her ambassadorship, Bernstein was a founding member of Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s longtime insurance agent.
Patrick Park, who regularly holds fundraisers at Mar-a-Lago, was picked to be ambassador to Austria but ultimately turned it down.

Brian Burns, who is also a Trump megadonor, was offered an ambassadorship to Ireland but also turned it down.

Marks was born in South Africa but has no diplomatic experience. She also has a string of lawsuits trailing behind her.

The Palm Beach Daily reports:

She is best known for her six-figure handbags, clutched by red-carpet celebrities like Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie and Kate Winslett. But she also has a trail of business lawsuits in addition to no diplomatic experience. And in an unusual twist, she is expected to represent the United States before the government of the country in which she was born.

The White House has not commented on Mark’s potential ambassadorship, however, the reports of Marks potential nomination will no doubt once again raise questions if Trump is doling out perks and favors to the Mar-a-Lago elite who can afford the pricy initiation and membership fees.

Another Ethics Complaint Has Been Filed Against Kellyanne Conway

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has announced that it has filed another complaint against Kellyanne Conway due to what it calls a “likely” violation of the Hatch Act. Conway serves as counselor to President Donald Trump.

CREW, an organization that uses “aggressive legal action, in-depth research, and bold communications to advance its mission of reducing the influence of money in politics and […] foster a government that is ethical and accountable,” claims that Conway’s use of her official government Twitter account amounts to an ethical violation because of her promotion of “partisan political messages.”

It’s alleged that Conway has used her @KellyannePolls Twitter account for “partisan political purposes on several occasions.”

One of the examples given, amusingly, was Conway’s tweeting of a Mediaite article about the Democratic Party using a photo of potential Supreme Court nominee Thomas Hardiman in a story critical of Brett Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh has, of course, gone on to be sworn as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

CREW also took issue with some of Conway’s retweets, including a retweet of a Washington Examiner article headlined “Happy Days: Record low 12% worried about economy, great time to get a job.” The story features an image of President Trump wearing a MAGA hat.

The organization pointed to the Office of Special Counsel’s (OSC) “recent guidance” on social media activity for executive branch employees. That guidance says, all social media accounts must not “post or share messages directed at the success or failure of a political party, candidate in a partisan race, or partisan political group.”

Bombshell lawsuit depicts Trump family as ‘a racketeering enterprise that defrauded thousands of people’: NYT

A massive 160-page complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan this week alleges that the entire Trump family has for years engaged in fraud intended to rip off unsophisticated investors.

The New York Times reports that the complaint “alleges that Mr. Trump and his family received secret payments from three business entities in exchange for promoting them as legitimate opportunities, when in reality they were get-rich-quick schemes that harmed investors, many of whom were unsophisticated and struggling financially.”

Additionally, reports the Times, the complaint depicts the Trump Organization as “a racketeering enterprise that defrauded thousands of people.”

At the center of the lawsuit are three separate business entities: ACN, a telecommunications firm that gave Trump money in exchange for endorsing its products; the Trump Network, which was responsible for the ill-fated Trump Vitamins nutritional regimen; and the Trump Institute, a Trump University-like entity that the lawsuit claims offered “extravagantly priced multiday training seminars” that purportedly gave attendees access to Trump’s “secrets” to selling real estate.

Attorneys Roberta Kaplan and Andrew Celli Jr., who are representing plaintiffs in the lawsuit, tell the New York Times that their case “connects the dots at the Trump Organization and involves systematic fraud that spanned more than a decade, involved multiple Trump businesses and caused tremendous harm to thousands of hardworking Americans.”

US Interior Department watchdog sends probe into Ryan Zinke’s conduct to DOJ: Washington Post

The U.S. Interior Department’s acting inspector general has referred a probe into Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s conduct to the U.S. Justice Department for further investigation, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

Mary Kendall, the acting inspector general of the Interior Department, is conducting at least three probes into Zinke’s conduct, including his involvement in a Montana land deal, and a decision not to grant two tribes approval to run a casino in Connecticut. It was not clear which probe had been sent to the Justice Department.

We Re-Watched The Iowa Fundraiser At Heart Of AG’s Trump Foundation Probe

At the heart of the lawsuit to shut down the Donald J. Trump Foundation for “persistent illegal conduct” is one event: the January 2016 televised fundraiser for veterans that Trump held in lieu of attending a GOP debate.

TPM re-watched the footage of the fundraiser at Des Moines’ Drake University to see if, as Trump Foundation attorney Alan Futerfas has argued, any political benefit Trump drew from the event was “intangible.”

The short answer: that’s something of a stretch.

The hour-long fundraiser had all the trappings of a Trump campaign rally, with the candidate devoting the bulk of his 30 minutes of remarks to boosting his 2016 race. Viewers are left with the distinct impression that a vote for Trump is a vote for veterans, who would benefit from his personal largesse and that of his wealthy friends.

At a hearing in a stuffy Manhattan courtroom last week, Futerfas insisted that Trump was simply raising money for a good cause—something politicians do all the time. Futerfas, who is pushing to get the suit brought by New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood thrown out, accurately noted that “every penny” that the foundation took in ultimately went to deserving charities.

But those remarks didn’t tackle the meat of Underwood’s allegation: that the event amounted to an improper in-kind contribution from Trump’s foundation to his campaign, with the candidate fusing resources from both entities to boost support among conservatives in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses.

The events’ funds were raised “in a manner designed to influence the 2016 presidential election at the direction and under the control of senior leadership of the Trump presidential campaign,” Underwood alleged. Her office wants to recoup the $2.8 million the foundation raised at that event because it was the campaign, not the charity, that directed where the proceeds would go.

Let’s play back the tape.

Trump took the stage at Des Moines’ Drake University to an announcer calling him “the next president of the United States.” A banner on the podium had a link to the site to send donations, “DonaldTrumpforVets.com” along with his campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again!”

He tells the crowd that he “didn’t want to be here.” He’d prefer to be at the Fox News debate down the road but had been “treated badly” by the network. In his lengthy opening remarks, Trump took pot-shots at the “horrible” Iran nuclear deal, boasted about his poll and crowd sizes, and lamented that he was “turning down millions” so he could continue to claim he was “self-funding” his campaign.

Trump mocked “low-energy” rival Jeb Bush and floated nominating his friend and casino magnate Phil Ruffin to handle China in his future administration.

Talk of veterans focused mainly on the donations he’d managed to pull in on their behalf in the 24 hours since he’d announced the fundraiser. Many came from “very good friend,” including former Trump economic adviser Carl Icahn and real estate magnate Richard LeFrak. One came from himself.

“Donald Trump gave one million dollars, okay?” Trump told the crowd, to cheers.

A rotating cast of guests then join Trump on stage, including three former soldiers, then GOP-campaign rivals Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, and, for some reason, pro-Trump video bloggers Diamond and Silk.

Santorum and Huckabee offered the first sustained remarks about veterans. The former Pennsylvania senator lamented the high rates of suicide among returning soldiers, while the former Arkansas governor praised veterans for allowing us to “breathe every free breath of air we breathe.” Both men praised their opponent for inviting them to the event.

John Wayne Walding, a former Green Beret who lost his leg in Afghanistan, was up next. Though he said he was “not here for politics,” he went on to applaud the “unapologetically American” movement Trump started.

“America is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to this planet in its existence and why should I ever say I’m sorry for that?” Walding asked. “Mr. Trump, he says things that may not make you feel good but it’s the better thing for this great country.”

Walding was joined by two former military buddies including Jacob Schick, executive director of a veterans’ suicide organization, who presented Trump with a “personal honor ring.”

“We hope you wear it with pride so we can make America great again together, brother,” Schick told Trump.

Capping things off were Diamond and Silk, social media personalities with no discernible connection to the military or veterans.

Hugging the nominee, one of the sisters said, “We all know that this is not a rally, this is for our veterans, but I want you all to know that it is imperative that you get out and caucus for Donald J. Trump and vote for Donald J. Trump.”

In total, the event pulled in around $5.6 million in tax-free donations. Some $2.8 million went to the Trump Foundation, and the remainder was given directly by private donors to veterans’ charities.

Emails obtained by the attorney general’s office show that Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer and the Trump Foundation’s treasurer, flew to Iowa with a checkbook the day of the fundraiser in case money needed to be doled out. Weisselberg subsequently went to Trump campaign adviser Corey Lewandowski to ask where the donations should be disbursed and in what amount.

Weisselberg was visible in the front row of the Des Moines event, sitting next to the three eldest Trump children, who sat on the foundation board. None of those individuals had a say in how the funds their charity received would be spent, the attorney general’s office has alleged.

Additionally, as government attorney Yael Fuchs said at last week’s hearing, the “timing and manner of distribution was also controlled and directed by the campaign for the political benefit of Mr. Trump.”

Trump held five political rallies around Iowa in the days after the fundraiser, including two on the day of the caucuses, handing out enlarged $100,000 checks from the foundation to veterans’ charities. At one of those appearances, he claimed his poll numbers had likely gone up because of the event.

Judge Saliann Scarpulla declined last week to weigh in on the merits of the attorney general’s allegations, but said that at this point in the proceedings, she had to accept them as true.

Melania Trump Racked Up a $95,000 Hotel Bill After Spending Just 6 Hours in Cairo

Travel doesn’t come cheap for First Lady Melania Trump.

Federal spending records indicate that during Trump’s trip to Cairo earlier this month, the U.S. State Department paid $95,050 to the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo hotel for the first lady’s visit — but according to her spokesperson, she didn’t even stay the night!

The first lady’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told Quartz, which first reported the news, the Mrs. Trump was only in Cairo for six hours.

Grisham confirmed to PEOPLE that the first lady did not stay at the hotel overnight. Grisham also questioned where the federal spending records got its information, adding that her team is looking into where the number came from. She did not directly dispute the figure, however.

Rooms at the luxury hotel range from $119 to $699 per night, according to the Semiramis Intercontinental Cairo’s website.

The spending records were not itemized, offering no hints at what charges led to the bill.

This isn’t the first time a Trump outing has cost the taxpayers thousands of dollars.

During Donald Trump’s July stay at his own golf resort in Scotland, which included him hitting the links for two rounds of golf, taxpayers were left footing a $68,800 bill, according The Scotsman.

Trump, his son Eric, and White House staff spent two nights at the Trump Turnberry, paid for with State Department money, the Scottish newspaper reported.

The Trump Organization did not dispute The Scotsman‘s report that the U.S. government paid $68,800 to Turnberry to cover the cost of Trump’s visit. However, a statement emailed to PEOPLE and attributed to George A. Sorial, the Trump Organization’s executive vice president and chief compliance counsel, said that the company didn’t profit from the stay.

“For United States government patronage, our hotels charge room rates only at cost and we do not profit from these stays,” Sorial said in the statement.

During her trip to Africa, which included the stop in Cairo, the first lady spoke out against all of the criticisms that have been directed at her, calling herself the “most bullied person in the world.“

In a sit-down with ABC News, the first lady told chief national affairs correspondent Tom Llamas that her “Be Best” policy platform targeting online bullies is personal.

“I could say that I’m the most bullied person in the world,” she said in the sit-down, taped during her recent tour of Africa. “One of them — if you really see what people are saying about me.”

“That’s why ‘Be Best’ is focusing on online behavior and social media,” Mrs. Trump continued. “We need to educate the children [about] social, emotional behavior.”

During the trip, the first lady was also criticized for wearing a pith helmet, a hat most commonly associated with colonialists.

“I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear,” she told reporters during a stop in Giza, Egypt.

Court denies Trump's request to appeal ruling allowing emoluments case to proceed

A federal judge in Maryland on Friday rejected President Trump’s latest request to put a lawsuit on hold that alleges he violated the Constitution by doing business with foreign governments while in office.

Judge Peter Messitte, of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, denied the administration's request to put discovery in the case on hold, paving the way for plaintiffs to seek information in the lawsuit.

He also refused to allow the administration to appeal his earlier orders that allowed the case to proceed.

In March, Messitte ruled that the attorneys general in Maryland and the District of Columbia had standing to sue the president for allegedly violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which bans the sitting president from accepting gifts or payments from foreign and domestic governments.

The plaintiffs argue that Trump has violated the clause by accepting payments from foreign governments either directly or indirectly through his namesake hotel in Washington, D.C.

In July, the judge, who is an appointee of former President Clinton, further held that the plaintiffs had stated a claim under the Emoluments Clause.

He said the term "emolument" expansively covers any so-called non-de minimis profit, gain or advantage the president receives through the Trump International Hotel by virtue of government customers’ patronage of the hotel, according to court documents.

Trump lawyers argued in their request to throw out the lawsuit that “reasonable jurists could differ as to the proper interpretation of the Emoluments Clauses.”

Messitte in his opinion Friday said Trump had not done enough to justify putting the case before an appellate court for review.

Experts say it was a rare move for Trump to ask for the court’s permission to appeal its preliminary rulings.

David Super, a professor at Georgetown Law, said parties typically have to wait for a final judgment in a case before filling an appeal.

In legal terms, it isn’t very significant because any issues the president would like to raise he’s free to raise on appeal when there is a final judgment in the case,” he said.

But Super noted that the ruling allows the trial to proceed to the discovery phase in which the parties will be seeking information about what payments Trump received through his hotel and where they came from.

“If that information would be embarrassing to the president then in a political sense he has suffered a loss,” Super said.

In a statement Friday afternoon, DOJ spokeswoman Kelly Laco said the agency disagrees and is disappointed by the court's ruling.

"This case, which should have been dismissed, presents important questions that warrant immediate appellate review," she said.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine called the court’s decision another major win.

“Our next step is to proceed with discovery,” he said in a statement. “We will soon provide the court a new schedule to begin the process of getting information about how President Trump is profiting from the presidency.”

So, along about early October the big boys in the defense industry (Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin) saw their stocks take a nose dive. All of them. About 15%, in less than a month, following the old adage that stocks take the elevator down and the escalator up.

There was a lot of speculation about this, you know, why the defense industry took a nose dive after, you know, Trump jacked up the DOD budget and took food out of the mouths of orphans and widows.

Well, as it turns out, In September, the Pentagon proposed a plan that would, effectively, tie contractor pay more closely to ongoing performance for longer-term contracts. See, the way it usually works is the contractor (lets take General Dynamics and their Virginia Class submarines) pay up front the cost of whatever they are building, and then get reimbursed on a regular basis. So, the Pentagon decided a better approach would be to pay for completion as it progresses, so if a submarine is 10% built, General Dynamics gets 10% of the price of the submarine.

Which upset the industry something fierce. See, they have a lot of up front costs that traditionally they've been reimbursed for as they occur, so they've gotten more of the total early on, and less towards the end of a project. This change, the industry said, will drop our receivables from 20 to 50%, and damn it, that hurts!

Now, why one might ask would the Pentagon do such a thing?
